Certificates

When certificates are issued, certificate templates serve as blueprints.

The certificate template includes both static elements (such as the company name or logo) and dynamic elements (such as the username or certification title) (such as code or digital signature). Individual certificates are generated and assigned to users based on the certification template.

What are certificate templates?

Certificate templates are available directly from the Workplace launcher or through Site administration > Certificates > Manage certificate templates. To use this feature, permission to Manage certificates (tool/certificate: manage) must be granted.

You are presented with a list of certificate templates. On the right of each item, you can perform a variety of actions, some of which are standard Workplace icons (Edit, Details, Preview, Duplicate, and Delete), while others are certificate-specific.

Introducing a new certificate template

Select the New certificate template button to create a new certificate template.

Name: The certificate template name does not have to be unique, but it is best if it is not used more than once.

Course category – The certificate is available in the tenant that uses the selected course category, as defined in the tenant settings. If the option Available in sub-categories and courses is checked, users (with permission) will be able to use this template within all courses in this category and sub-categories.

If this option is turned off, the template will only be available in the category you’ve chosen. If no course category is chosen, the certificate is shared by all tenants.

It should be noted that this behavior differs from that of other tools that support multi-tenancy because certificates are linked to course categories rather than tenants.

That is, tenant users can access certificates defined in their tenant’s category as well as shared certificates defined at the system level.

Page width and page height – The default values for page width and page height are determined by your server locale and use landscape format. If you want to make a certificate in portrait format, change the values round. For reference, A4 paper measures 297 mm x 210 mm, while letter paper measures 279 mm x 216 mm.

Left and right margins – These are the widths of the left and right edges in millimeters. The default value is 0.

When you save the certificate template, you are taken to the certificate designer, where you can add certificate elements.

Certificate design

The certificate designer allows you to create multi-page certificate templates with static elements like a company logo, dynamic elements like the date of issue or the username, and verification elements like a QR code.

The certificate designer includes the following controls:

Adding Certificate Template Elements Changing the order of the elements with the standard Move icon changes which element appears in front of another.

Each item can be renamed using inline editing or by clicking the label. The Settings icon displays the item’s parameters in a pop-up window, while the Delete icon deletes the entry.

Creating a new page, The page height and width, as well as the page margins, must be specified. The current page’s default values are used.

The current page can be expanded and collapsed.

Uses

Certificates have the potential to be used for a wide range of purposes. After all, a certificate is just a piece of information. The operating system and applications are in charge of using that data to perform functions such as message encryption and connection authentication.

However, there are numerous templates designed for specific purposes. The application policies are used to specify how a certificate template can be used. You can specify which certificates can be used for which purposes using application policies, also known as extended key usage or enhanced key usage. This allows you to issue certificates without fear of them being misused.

Advantages

A certificate based on the Smartcard User template, for example, can be used by a user to send secure e-mail, perform client authentication, and log on with a smart card. It cannot be used to authenticate a server to a client, recover files, encrypt files, or perform many other tasks that require a certificate by default.

Furthermore, the certificate can only be issued to a human, not a computer.

The Smartcard User template, like many others, can be used for a variety of purposes.

Using certificate templates with multiple functions is a great way to reduce the number of certificates required in a company.

Many certificate templates, on the other hand, serve only one purpose. Single-function certificate templates are extremely limited and can only be used for a single function.

For example, you could issue certificates with a certificate lifetime of 2 months for a sensitive operation such as key recovery.

This certificate function should not be combined with a less sensitive function, such as an EFS certificate, because an EFS certificate should have a much longer lifetime.

Purpose

Certificates also allow two entities to communicate securely and confidentially. Personal certificates are used by individuals, whereas server certificates are used to establish secure sessions between the server and clients using secure sockets layer (SSL) technology.

Importance

A certificate template serves as a blueprint for administrators to configure and assign attributes to certificates so they know what they’re supposed to do. When a template is configured, it is converted into a certificate and ready for issuance.

Certificate templates can be configured by administrators using certificate authorities (CA), which are trusted entities that issue digital certificates.

In contrast to other standards that allow anyone to sign and issue certificates, x.509 certificate adheres to the CA hierarchical system, which means that only CAs can sign certificates.

When a device or user requests a certificate, the CA can be configured to determine whether the device or user is eligible for a certificate and what type of certificate should be issued.

The certificate template specifies which user attributes should be included on the certificate and what the certificate’s intended use case is.

This article will go over the various components of certificate templates, such as their structure, settings, policies, types of templates, use cases, and how to configure them.

Conclusion

You can create any type of certificate using Certificate templates. Such as name certificate, Achievement certificate, certificate of analysis, certificate of authenticity, Authority certificate, citizenship certificate,

Compliance certificate, certificate of destruction, Disposition certificate, Certificate of blank, Certificate of good standing, Certificate of incorporation, certificate of incumbency, Certificate Of Merit Blank, etc. can be created with the help of many certificates of the template. Certificates are used in many schools, colleges, corporate offices, government and non-government organizations, and institutes.
